The second day of this festival has passed and wow its been a tiring day. We started off by going into out ensemble groups and finally meeting the people whom we would collaborate closely in order to create our final performance. I was in a fantastic group with 10 other students and a teacher from ISK. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting every single one of the new students and getting to know the ones from AISL whom I didn’t know that well. We did that fro a short period of time and then we went to Monkey Pools for the excursion. We were all given some time to explore and process the serenity of the place. I had been there before but it still never stops to amaze me. We drew inspiration for our performance from the area and I took a lot of pictures (see gallery). We spent about 20 minutes going around the place and documenting all we saw and expressing how we felt things using our five senses. I’ve forgotten the phrase that the teachers used. Sensory Exploration? I honestly don’t remember. It was basically saying that we should go out, explore and write down how each of our senses responded to the stimuli. We re-grouped and spoke about what we saw and how they affected us. Some of us saw the same things and reacted differently in terms of smell or sound and I found this fascinating. After that, I took a bit of time to just sit and reflect on what we had done that day whilst listening to music that relaxes me. We were asked to then do some free writing. We just sat there and wrote what was on our minds at the time and I realised that I have a lot of chatter that I’m not usually aware of. When asked to put it to paper, I was astounded at how much I had to filter out because my thoughts were flitting from one thought to the next insanely quickly. I finished writing and was shocked because of the sheer amount if content that just sits in my mind after 5 minutes. After that revelation we went back to school and we started with our 3rd workshop. I chose stage combat and it’s one of the most interesting things I’ve ever learned. I scared my brother with it and that made it all worth it. I learned how to slap and punch and pull hair with elegance and ease. We went back to our ensembles and we started work on our performance pieces. Ideas were shared and a common one that we all had was the rug in the centre of the room. There was a tree on it with large leaves and they spread over the whole rug. Somehow, we all found inspiration from it and that’s where our piece started.
