ISSEA DAY 1
22/01/2015
Today was the very first day of the ISSEA Drama and Arts Festival. I was pretty nervous. The last time is did anything like this was ISTA and I was in in 8th grade so I was quite inexperienced. It was a really simple day, mostly full of introductions and icebreaker activities. I remember clearly one activity where we were told to walk from one end of the stage as an astronaut in space. I don’t know what about the slow deliberate movements caught my attention so much but it did. We then saw the work that all the Visual Arts students had prepared and I was amazed. They were so concise and wild and imaginative. One particular piece caught my eye. I don’t remember what school the girl was from or even what her name was but her painting was amazing. It was simple and it was a girl wearing a robe in front of a black background. The robe was open and revealed her torso and legs. It was done in an anime style and I found it fascinating. I absolutely love that kind of style in Visual Art and I was in awe of her skill. Lunch and a few other activities passed by in a blur and then it was time for my first Workshop. I had chosen Makeup because it’s not something that I consider myself an expert on and I wanted to expand my knowledge. We were given a paper and pencils and were told to draw a style on the faces on the paper. We were then supposed to put these ideas into real life and paint each others faces. I painted a fellow DP student named Natasha. My style was an “Egyptian” theme. What I did was very minimalistic but it caught people’s attention. She painted in my face and it was very geometric and flashy. My next workshop was quite a workout as it was Dance and story telling. We were taught by a group that performs quite frequently at school how to do Zambian dances. I was the story teller so I began the performance with a plot and then we danced the story out. I went home slightly sore because of using muscles that I hadn’t used for a very long time but I went home happy nonetheless. I learned quite a fair amount from both these workshops and I’m grateful for the instructors taking the time to teach them.
